From the Founder

Growing up, I lived and traveled in many countries because my father worked for an international human rights agency. As a result, our house always had many books and vigorous discussions of social justice, philanthropy, and more.

Through these conversations and early exposure to diverse cultures, my parent’s gift was an appreciation of the world around me and a feeling of responsibility to care for and respect it.

With that sense of responsibility, I founded Biashara Street as an online marketplace offering products and goods that limit their harm to humans, animals, and the Planet.

Biashara Street would also be a place, like my childhood home, where we can talk about sustainable, ethical, and healthy living. The latter would be my gift to the future.

I named BiasharaStreet.com for the colorful, bustling marketplaces in Nairobi, Kenya, which I visited as a young girl. Biashara (pronounced “Bee-ah-sha-ra”) means business, trade, or commerce in Swahili, an official language of East Africa.

On Biashara Street, you will find not only a diversity of ethical and sustainable products from around the world – good for you, good for the people who make them, and good for the Planet., but vendors who subscribe to the same values as us which you can find on the menu tab.

In line with these values, Biashara Street is participating in 1% for the Planet, giving 1% of our sales back to the environment.

Our Origin Story

Over the years, from around 2003 to most recently, several family members experienced one or more health issues that required a healthier lifestyle change. As a result, we started to eat clean, exercise, and become more attentive to our contributions to making Mother Earth a better place.

On a clear, crisp night in the Spring of 2018, we reflected on our life accomplishments. Then, we began asking ourselves some fundamental questions of whether we were happy with our achievements and contributions to our families, careers, and community. Our answer was an overwhelming “Yes!”

As we continued to reflect, we wondered what legacy we wanted to leave behind. We each jotted down some ideas for the next chapter, individually and collectively. The night ended with many scribbles on paper, followed by months of researching and planning.

By January 2019, we knew what we wanted to do:

start an eco-friendly e-commerce marketplace.

Not only to sell eco-friendly and organic products but to practice, promote and educate sustainability values. Of course, we thought, many marketplaces carry healthy and sustainable products; however, what problems can WE solve in this vast industry? What are some of the most effective and straightforward ways to address all matters about improving one’s health, acknowledging climate change, and leaving a better, cleaner, and greener world for future generations?

Limiting the harm to humans, animals, and the planet is not enough; although vital, we must positively impact by providing healthy, clean, and sustainable products while educating and encouraging our customers to make better choices.

Furthermore, we want to ensure that we positively impact the places and people we encounter to leave this earth we call our home better than we found. The latter is our commitment to the future!

Fast forward to 2020… As the pandemic ravaged the earth and the world as we knew it changed, our desire and decision to move in this direction were imperative. In addition, our dreams for a balanced healthy lifestyle and social responsibility were equally important and a priority.

And voilà! The birth of BiasharaStreet.com

Together we can have influence and build a legacy by playing our part in making this world a little better one purchase at a time.

Our Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

Biashara Street embraces and celebrates the diversity of culture, background, thoughts, and perspectives.

We are committed to creating a platform that accepts, honors, and supports these diversities and inclusions to benefit our employees, business partners, customers, products, and community.

What’s in a Name?

Pronunciation: Bee-ah-sha-ra

Origin: Kiswahili

Dictionary Translation: Business, Trade, Commerce

As incorporated in our name: Commerce or Business Street

Why It Resonated

I recall a street in Nairobi, Kenya (East Africa). In the middle of this typical urban jungle was a bustling street lined with various storefronts and other commercial businesses, all conducting some form of trade.

Although I was barely ten years old, my memory of this marketplace is colorful and vibrant bustling streets filled with people, traders, and shoppers from all levels of society. They displayed a plethora of merchandise choices from imports to eclectic locally manufactured and handmade products and crafts.

And, of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention the beautiful, mouthwatering aromas of foods emitted from the variety of restaurants and cafes nestled in between these stores as one strolled through negotiating deals for our purchases.

On Biasharastreet.com, you will find global diversity when you conduct business and shop, in addition to an array of products that are amazingly fabulous for your health and the environment.

Therefore, Biashara Street was unanimously the perfectly appropriate choice for our name!
